Each year, the Dance Program at Union Mine High School grows in strength and expands in numbers. Students choose to enroll in this unique Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) class to gain confidence and overcome shyness, to meet new people in a welcoming and inclusive environment, and to manage stress while engaging in an artistic opportunity only available to most in this school environment. Many students find such a kindred relationship with the UMHS Dance Program, that they re-enroll each year of their high school career, and many continue to study the fine art in their higher education. Encompassing, and underlying this interest in the Dance Program is the bi-annual Dance Concert, which provides these young artists with the opportunity to express their passion while performing for their community.
Union Mine High School’s Dance Department is pleased to present its 17th Annual Spring Dance Concert; Three Days of Peace & Dance. More than 60 beginning, intermediate and advanced students have devoted the comprehensive Spring Semester to the creation, exploration, and inspiration of choreography, as they workshop and master dance movement to be enjoyed on stage at ‘Theatre at the Mine’. A wide variety of disciplines and themes will be exhibited on May 18th, 19th and 20th, from Lindy Hop to Tango, hip-hop to contemporary, Broadway to lyrical to tap. “We had a lot of fun working on these dances throughout the Term, and hope that our hard work is portrayed in the show,” say Sophomore Alyvia Rymer and Junior Maggie Groves.

Union Mine High School’s Dance Department is pleased to present its 17th Annual Winter Dance Concert, Around the World in 5,6,7,8. This production highlights traditional ethnic dances from China to Louisiana; Greece to Algeria.
Multiculturalism is a prevalent and important concept in our current educational, social and political environment, encompassing historical contexts, relationships between race and society, and a focus on elements that determine cultural and social fabric, including the arts. Multiculturalism fosters self-regard and identity in one’s own culture; respect and connection towards the culture of others. In an effort for young performing artists at Union Mine High School to locate themselves physically, socially, morally and politically within an increasingly complex international context, they have used the vehicle of dance to traverse global cultures.
The UMHS Dance Department has collectively explored, studied, created and choreographed traditional dances from around the world. Students have developed an increased awareness of global and local ethnic and racial groups, and broadened their understanding of the culture and values of the pluralistic global society in which we live.
Please join us to celebrate Around the World in 5,6,7,8.
